Lawrence Onoja


Lawrence Onoja was given birth on 10 August 1948. He is a native of Ohimini Local Government Area in Benue State and speaks Idoma.

Lawrence Onoja was appointed military governor of Plateau State between 1986 to July 1988

His early educational pursuit saw him attend St. Francis College in Otukpo and proceeded to Government College in Lafia, Nassarawa State between 1962-1966 from where he joined the army as a cadet officer in the same year. He was commissioned into the Nigerian Army in October 1968 after POP from Nigerian Defence Academy and Mons Officer cadet School in England where he earned B.Sc Political Science and subsequently M.Sc Political Science and PhD in International Law and Diplomacy both from University of Jos, Nigeria.


In his bid to curtail ethno-religious crisis and killings in Plateau State, Lawrence Onoja announced the closure of all worship centers in Plateau State and also the closing of University of Jos, Plateau State in 1988.
