What today is known as University of Jos is located in Jos North LGA in Plateau North senatorial district. It’s year of establishment was November 1971 and as a satellite campus of University of Ibadan.
University of Jos became an institutions of its own in October 1976 championed by the military government of General Murtala Mohammed. By this, Professor Gilbert Onuaguluchi became the pioneer and first Vice – chancellor of Unijos.
The history of University of Jos started with include the following faculties; Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Natural Sciences and Medical Sciences and 575 number of pioneer students in the first four faculties when it was a satellite of University of Ibadan and in 1977 when Post-graduate programs were added then Law Faculty and Environmental Sciences were included and also separation of Arts and Social Sciences. This brought a total of 7 faculties in the University of Jos in 1978.
